Organize a School Visit
Go Green—Get Real with School Kids!
I (Donna) have been invited to speak to elementary school kids about the environmental benefits of real Christmas trees since 2009. Each time I meet with a group, I try to think of a new way to convey the importance of photosynthesis to them. We have used craft projects, videos, and even a play to explain how oxygen is produced when carbon dioxide and water combine in the presence of sunlight in the leaves of trees to create oxygen. Photosynthesis—The Play may not be ready for Broadway, but it was a hit at the Environmental Learning Center in Savage.
On May 15, 2015, I was again invited to speak to Hidden Valley Elementary fourth graders at McColl Pond Environmental Learning Center in Savage. We talked about the life cycle of a Christmas tree. Trying to answer the question, how does a tree grow? And what part does photosynthesis play in this process?
